The 10th Annual Ache Around the Lake and Ouch Fun Walk was held Saturday, September 19, 2015.

The Ache Around the Lake started out as a USAT&F-certified 8K (4.97 mile) race and now includes a separate, two-mile fun run called “The Ouch.” Because the race is nestled in the foothills and held in September, it often draws people who enjoy a destination race.

In 2014, the event drew nearly 200 runners and walkers, mostly residents of North and South Carolina. Almost 40% of race participants are residents of Polk County, North Carolina, and 30% of race participants are from Greenville County, South Carolina. Many participants stay at local inns or bed-and-breakfasts and enjoy the quaint appeal of area antique shops, fine restaurants, and the backdrop of the Carolina Mountains at peak fall foliage.

Since 2007, proceeds from the Ache charity race event have helped St. Luke’s Hospital upgrade our Radiology Department to digital technology, as well as upgrade Surgery, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, our Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, and Pharmacy. In 2013, the Ache proceeds were used toward the Activities of Daily Living Lab at St. Luke’s Hospital. Monies raised helped cover the costs of the simulated kitchen, tub, shower, curb, and vehicle, as well as support other projects throughout the ADL Lab.

Your support of the 2015 Ache will benefitted the Discretionary Fund at St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation. This fund enables the Foundation to exercise discretionary spending when evaluating and purchasing small equipment items, facilitating required equipment repairs, or accommodating other unplanned expenses that develop during the course of the hospital’s fiscal year.
