FAQs

Why is the race called “Ache Around the Lake”?

Because when you cross the finish after running the 8K distance that includes four major hills (the first one called “Grunt Hill” just .6 miles in), you literally ACHE! The hills come fast, and there are quite a few switchbacks to keep your muscles guessing. But the pain quickly dissipates at the fun finish, especially if you win a coveted “Ache” handmade pottery award!

What’s the fastest time?

25:01. That’s a 5 minute mile. Incredible record held by Stuart Moran of Arden, NC.

What’s in it for walkers?

Walkers definitely get a hard work-out with the rolling hills increasing heart rate and burning calories. Many “Achers” do a run/walk combination, usually running the flats and walking the hills.

Is there a training group for The Ache?

As a matter of fact there is! Check us out on Facebook to see when the next meet-up is. It’s informal and runners/walkers are all grouped according to pace. Great way to check out the course before the big day.

Can I run or walk with a Baby Stroller or Jogger?

Yes! But go for the Baby Jogger instead. It handles the inclines much better.

What about my dog?

Bring Fido, just keep him on a leash and clean up after him if he does his business on the roadway. In fact, we will have an award for “Top Dog” going to the fastest pooch!

Is there a Kids’ Fun Run?

Not officially, but the new “Ouch” 2-miler is perfect for younger kids and adults who don’t want the full 8K (or 4.97 miles) around the lake.

Hey, where’s my race packet?

We are going really green this year and aren’t going to put all those goodies in a bag…even if it is just paper (vs. plastic). But don’t worry, your T-Shirt (if you were in the first 200 to register) will still be there waiting for you on registration morning. We’ll also have a all the normal race bag goodies available for you on the table for you to take.

How do I get to the start?

You need to park in the Tryon Antique Mall parking lot across from the Lake Lanier entrance on Highway 176 in Tryon, NC. The address is 1005 South Trade Street, Tryon, NC 28782.

What time does the race start?

8:00 a.m. The timing will begin exactly at that time, no exceptions.

How late can I register on race morning?

Registration will close promptly at 7:30 a.m. NO EXCEPTIONS..
